The WTM Global Trends Report 2010, in association with market research company Euromonitor International, has done it again when it comes to accurately predicting future travel and tourism trends.
The launch of the WTM Global Trends Report 2011, taking place on Monday November 7 at World Travel Market, will be no exception when the next key industry trends to hit the sector will be shared with the international media.
Here is a round-up of correctly predicted trends from the 2010 Global Trends Report:
The Global Trends Report 2010 predicted a booming business and leisure tourism trade for Iraq following years of internal conflict. Iraq’s participation as an exhibitor at WTM 2010, its first time at a travel event in a decade, last year was proof of the rebirth of tourism for the country.
Further proof has come in the launch of Galileo Iraq in February to provide global distribution services in the country.
Global hotel giants including InterContinental Hotels Group and Marriott are eyeing up the potential for properties in Baghdad as well as other destinations within the country where religious tourism is popular, according to a recent report in USA Today.
The WTM Global Trends Report 2010 also tipped deprivation holidays as a key industry trend as stressed executives spurned luxury and turned to extreme exercise such as trekking and bootcamp-style retreats as a means of release.
The prediction proved correct with lifestyle-change resorts on the up since the Biggest Loser weight-loss programme was televised. The programme has ties to a resort in Utah and a new branch in Malibu which are booked up two months in advance. There are also plans to extend the concept to other parts of the country.
In addition, a tie up between Funjet Vacations and My Destination Wellness to launch Reboot Camp in response to the demand from travellers for holidays centred on healthy living and the right exercise.
There is no denying the rise of mobile travel, another trend highlighted in the report. Every day another travel and tourism company unveils an iPhone, iPad or Android application and with access to the internet via mobile set to take over access via PC in three years the trend will continue.
The results of the WTM Global Trends Report 2011will be launched at a press conference for the world’s media at World Travel Market on Monday 7 November 1pm, Platinum Suite 5&6.
A session for WTM exhibitors and visitors takes place on Tuesday 8 November North Gallery Room 6&7.
World Travel Market Chairman Fiona Jeffery said: “The WTM Global Trends Report is one of the travel and tourism industry’s most anticipated reports due to its high success rate at predicting trends for the sector.
“The WTM Global Trends Report 2010 was no exception with a number of the key trends being proved correct in 2011. This year’s report is sure to follow suit and be a must attend press conference and trade conference for WTM’s attendees.”

Almost 48,000 senior travel industry professionals, government ministers and international press, embark on ExCeL – London every November to network, negotiate and discover the latest industry opinion and trends at WTM.
