Three Hybrid Retailers in Latin America
Modern retailing accounts for less than 50% of all retailing in Latin America, states Claire Moulin, Research Analyst at Euromonitor International. This lack of modern retailing has created opportunities for hybrid retailing concepts to enter the retailing industry in Latin America. These concept stores are a mix between hypermarkets, supermarkets, discounters, and convenience stores.
One of the new hybrid concepts, Maxi Pali, is located in Costa Rica. Costa Rica has been penetrated by modern retailers such as Wal-Mart, so the county’s acceptance of modern retailing is high. Maxi Pali mixes the wide range of products found in hypermarkets with the low prices of discounters. Maxi Pali also benefits from brand awareness: the Pali brand and Maxi Bodega are already two well-known stores in Costa Rica. Moulin highlights two more hybrid store concepts in the video.
