The news of Marriott buying Starwood is a surprise given that both Hyatt and IHG were put forward as potential buyers, but this is a positive development for both parties involved. While it is still unknown what will happen to the Starwood brands, the Sheraton brand is a possible candidate to be cut due to a recent lackluster performance. In the hotel industry as a whole, the purchasing of Starwood by Marriott may be a precursor to more mega-deals, as more mergers and acquisitions are due. This is a direct result of the growth of sites such as Expedia, Priceline and Airbnb.
