Cross border shopping has always been a problem for Canadian retailers, especially during the holidays with Canadian consumers flock to the US for Black Friday deals. In 2012, cross border shopping increased due to the raise of exemptions for duty free goods brought back into Canada from the US. In an effort to keep shoppers country-side in 2102, many Canadian branches of US retailers such as Wal-Mart and Best Buy offered deals as well on Black Friday. While the concept managed to keep some consumers from crossing the border, the extent of promotions was not enough to have a significant impact.
