Lighting Up or Putting Out? Global Trends in Smoking Prevalence


Smoking rates are in decline in most developed economies (particularly in North America, Australasia and Scandinavia), but a contrary trend is evident in many emerging markets, such as Indonesia, Poland, Iran, Kenya and Saudi Arabia. The gender balance among smokers has shifted markedly over recent years, and in some Western European markets (such as Sweden and Ireland), there are now more female than male smokers.
