Sugar is in the middle of a storm of controversy, with more attention is being paid to the amount consumers purchase and consume. Although the average global consumer purchases 36 grams of sugar per day through packaged foods and soft drinks, these numbers vary by region depending on the penetration of these categories. Assuming the sugar content of food and beverage products stays the same and based on forecast volume sales, the world will be buying 2 grams more per capita a day by 2019, with emerging markets driving this growth.
