China continues to hold the fate of global baby milk formula in its hands. Already the world’s biggest market by far in 2012, retail value sales should more than double by 2017. With more Chinese women in work, and thus less willing to breastfeed but more able to afford milk formula, the category should continue to expand strongly in spite of China’s one child policy. That said, the one child policy also means that formats for older children, especially toddler milk, remain the most dynamic.
