Japan is the largest market in the world for convenience stores, accounting for 37% of total global sales, states Raphael Moreau, Retailing Analyst at Euromonitor International. Japanese convenience stores are known for their innovation, product assortments and varied store concepts. However, due to market saturation in Japan, convenience stores are targeting emerging markets, particularly China, for expansion. Two stores in particular, Family Mart and 7-Eleven, have planned numerous sites in China in the next five years.
