The biggest topic in payments today is the rise of the mobile phone as a global payment device. In emerging markets, the mobile phone is an affordable device used to reach the unbanked population. There are also ongoing shifts in payment preferences, as many new banked consumers shift from paper to plastic - i.e. credit and debit cards. Michelle Evans, Consumer Finance Industry Analyst at Euromonitor, discusses other trends in payments expected to rise to prevalence in the coming year.
