The global Alcoholic Drinks industry has once again demonstrated its relative resilience to wider economic concerns in 2011, posting solid year-on-year total volume gains of more than 2%. This has come on the back of seemingly improving socioeconomic fundamentals that have fortified top line sales against the post-recessionary tide still engulfing other FMCG industries. Nevertheless, the increasingly divergent fortunes separating developed and emerging markets is fast transforming the latter into the main protagonists for the industry.
As Asia Pacific, Middle East and Africa, Latin America and - to a lesser extent - Eastern Europe drive sales on the back of rampant trends favouring Westernisation and premiumisation, the chronically ill, and mature, markets of North America and Western Europe are teetering on the brink of a fresh - and potentially more vicious - economic downturn.
Given this state of affairs, what strategies can best confront the myriad opportunities and challenges facing alcoholic drinks companies? Looking ahead, how will best and worst case economic scenarios impact alcoholic drinks prospects?
In its latest webinar, Euromonitor International investigates the impact of deteriorating global economic prospects to alcoholic drinks sales, examining the general state of the market and key countries and regions. Insights on the potential pitfalls and opportunities amidst renewed global turmoil will also be examined.
• The seemingly never-ending travails of the PIIGS, the political impasse in the US, austerity measures sweeping Western Europe and fears for a hard landing in China have rekindled fresh recessionary concerns.
• As the jobless recovery turns to a jobless ambiguity across Western markets, alcoholic drinks consumption is going through a period of fundamental transformation.
• Trading down, economising, private label substitution, heavy discounting, rising grey/black market sales, a consumer shift to categories in lower price points and a return to affordable domestic specialties are all gaining momentum in mature markets, especially in those close to the epicentre of the sovereign debt crisis.
• Meanwhile, aspirational consumption, rampant Westernisation and a growing desire for ostentatious luxury are accelerating dramatically in the likes of India and China. Higher-end offerings in cognac and scotch whiskey are leading the charge.
• Niche categories can also swim against the tide. Premium craft beer is gaining traction in otherwise flatlining Western markets, while small batch spirits are being increasingly embraced by more adventurous millennial consumers.
