Packaging in Dog and Cat Food

Innovations in format and size are two trends to follow in pet food packaging, states Benjamin Punchard,  Head of Packaging Research at Euromonitor International. In North America, large sizes in  dry dog food reign supreme, with 70 oz. packs totaling about 230 million units in 2009. In format, traditionally flexible paper was the preferred format for dry dog food; however, flexible plastic is currently on the upswing. Emily Woon, Head of Pet Care Research, gives the example of Bakers Complete Gravy Bites 2 in 1, which features an easy carry handle, resealable zipper, and a built in spout to pour the food.
